Understanding Gestational Diabetes

What Is Gestational Diabetes?

Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes that develops during pregnancy, usually in the second or third trimester. It occurs when the body cannot produce enough insulin to meet the extra demands of pregnancy, leading to elevated blood sugar levels.

While it usually resolves after delivery, gestational diabetes requires careful management during pregnancy to reduce risks for both mother and baby, including pre-eclampsia, large birth weight, and neonatal complications.

Women who have had gestational diabetes also have an increased long-term risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, making postpartum follow-up and lifestyle modification essential.
